What the Hell is Avril Lavigne Thinking?
What the Hell is the first single released from Avrils 2011 album called Goodbye Lullaby. The single was put online on January 11th 2011.
The song starts up with a smooth and sexy keyboard riff previous to when Avril comes in with the words You say Im messing with your head meanwhile a group of cheerleaders back her up with yeah, yeahs. The record begins to become catchy at the pre-chorus and then explodes into the chorus that has more hooks than a fishing boat. The two part chorus features equally catchy vocal melodies, but then goes back into the cheerleaderish verse with even more yeah, yeahs. Avril apparently needs her cheerleader backups, it might remind you of her Girlfriend song from not too long ago.
‘All I want is to mess around,’ the song doesn’t pull any punches. Avril could care less, about anything at all. She doesnt care ‘if you mess around, if you love me, if you hate me.’ Life is nothing more but what the hell for Avril. Its an envious point of view. Wouldn’t you love to just drop everything and say whatever, or what the hell? I know I have, and this record helps me do it easily.
About 2:30 minutes into the release the bridge appears out of nowhere which contains a lot of woahs and Avril informing her bff that messing with your head. Who knows what that means. The record then kind of obviously leads back into the chorus for the next two trips around the hook.
Overall, its a fantastic release. The pre-teens will latch on to the rebellion in the record and presumably kids up to college aged will enjoy the beat and the sugary goodness of the melodies.
Appreciate this recording and search out for the full album in March of 2011 called Goodbye Lullaby. Based on this first single the album should be a barn burner.
I wrote even more about Avril’s new album here. Check it out!

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.
