As a guitar player and bass player, I know that you speak total wisdom in this. One thing that I think is important for beginners of any string instrument, especially that of bass and guitar, is to really develop a visual recognition process of the fretboard. This can happen naturally, but takes time, although understanding that its important my speed up the learning process for some.
