Family Tree Of The Epiphone Acoustic Guitar
Epiphone acoustic guitars were eventually manufactured by a company founded in 1837 by a man named Anastasios Stathopoulo. A Greek timber merchant’s son who was not to tread in his father’s footsteps. He instead crafted musical instruments such as violins, lutes, and the lioutos, a traditional Greek instrument. His creations were to eventually bear his name, A. Stathopoulo.
In 1917 the company name was became The House Of Stathopoulo. The decision to change it was made by the son of Anastasios who was named Epimanonodas. Two years earlier, out of necessity, Epimanondas, or Epi, took charge of the business because of his father’s untimely death. He was merely 22.
Epi decided that his company was to begin making banjos in the post World War One era due to the fact the company’s mainstay, the mandolin, was not as popular as it once was. The increasing popularity of the banjo was what prompted his decision to adapt his product line to fit the changing times. The same high standards of craftsmanship that the company was known for continued in the manufacture of this new line of products.
In 1924 the name Epiphone was officially registered. Epimanondas, now president and general manager, used a combination of his nickname Epi and phone, the Greek word for sound, to come up with a name that reflected change in the identity of the company.
The first guitars Epiphone manufactured, the recorder series, were not very popular. Production began on them in 1928. Sales were poor because the guitars were considered excessively ornate, a bit small in size, and lacked volume. The essential endorsements from celebrities were also definitely nonexistent for the series.
Three years later, in 1931, the new archtop guitars, in contrast, became very popular. The earlier flaws were not a factor as the guitars did not lack celebrity endorsements, were made larger, and had volume desired.
The switch to the making of guitars occurred at an opportune moment as the banjo’s popularity began to decline. Epiphone was thus able to avoid the fate of other companies in the banjo manufacturing business. This was attributable to Epimanondas Stathopoulo and his keen business sense. In fact it was one of only a limited number of firms specializing in banjo manufacturing to make the successful transition to guitars.
Epiphone acoustic guitars made from 1937 to 1956 are among the most desirable of instruments to today’s collectors. They are considered to be among the highest quality vintage archtop guitars of factory manufacture ever made. Among these most desired of collector’s the guitars that are the most coveted are the professional class models that the reputation of the company was built on.
